West Brom and Championship clubs to vote on PSR overhaul and spending limits

Championship clubs are set to vote on Friday at an EFL meeting on profit and sustainability changes that would align the division with the Premier League.

Albion were docked two points this season for breaching spending limits, a sanction the club felt was unfair, and on Wednesday they chose not to appeal. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the proposal would replace current rules with a squad cost ratio, capping spending on player costs at 85 per cent of football revenue.

The plan would also allow around £10m of annual equity to count towards revenue, increasing spending capacity. At present, clubs' losses are capped at £39m over a three-year period. The aim is to give Championship sides more room to invest in pursuit of promotion.

For the motion to pass, at least 16 of the 24 clubs must vote in favour. Teams have already been trialling the squad cost ratio in shadow form so they can switch quickly if approved.

It follows a season in which Leicester City were also deducted points for PSR breaches. Separately, League One clubs are voting on whether to align with League Two by cutting permitted spending from 60 per cent of turnover to 50. Some League One owners favour a salary cap, although that is not up for a vote.
