West Brom are only two points above the Championship drop zone after being charged by the EFL with an alleged profit and sustainability rules breach.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the EFL’s club financial reporting unit has notified Albion of the case and the club have 14 days to respond. Hearings typically follow within 28 days, which could see the matter heard before the season finishes, and an appeal may then follow.
Albion were understood to be confident that submissions filed by 31 December complied with the EFL’s limit of no more than £39 million losses across a three-year cycle. Since Shilen Patel’s Bilkul takeover in February 2024, the club have worked closely with the league to avoid breaches and potential sanctions.
Recently published accounts covering the 2024/25 campaign reported a £17 million loss, adding to a £31 million loss the previous season, with a three-year total since 2022 of £55.6 million. Not all of that counts towards PSR due to permitted add-backs for infrastructure, the women’s team and academy costs.
Possible punishments include a points deduction, transfer embargo or a fine. Under EFL guidelines, any deduction for this breach would apply in the season after the breach, which could seriously affect Albion’s survival battle. Their season ends at Sheffield Wednesday on 2 May, and their status could still be uncertain.
James Morrison’s side are on a seven-match unbeaten run, with four games remaining. Leicester City, second-bottom, received a six-point deduction last month related to charges from their 2023/24 Championship campaign.
