West Brom have been charged by the EFL with an alleged profit and sustainability breach, raising fresh jeopardy in their Championship survival battle.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the club were notified by the EFL’s club financial reporting unit and have 14 days to respond. Sanctions could include a points deduction, a transfer ban or a fine.

Albion believed their submissions by 31 December complied with rules that permit losses of up to £39m across three years. The club have worked closely with the EFL since Shilen Patel’s Bilkul takeover in February 2024 and had remained confident of compliance.

Recently published accounts for the 2024/25 campaign showed a £17m loss, following a £31m deficit the season before. The three-year total since 2022 is £55.6m, though permitted add-backs for infrastructure, the women’s team and academy are excluded from PSR.

James Morrison’s side are on a seven-match unbeaten run but sit only two points above the drop with four games left. Their season ends at Sheffield Wednesday on 2 May, and their status could still be unresolved if proceedings run into May.

After the CFRU files a compliance report, hearings usually take place within 28 days, so a case could be heard before the EFL season finishes on 25 May for the play-offs. Any deduction, which guidelines say is applied the season after the breach, could yet affect Albion’s Championship prospects. Last month Leicester City, currently second-bottom, were docked six points for charges related to their 2023/24 campaign.
