According to ExpressAndStar.com, Albion are in talks to bring long-time Celtic coach Gavin Strachan to The Hawthorns as part of James Morrison’s backroom reshuffle.
Morrison wants the 47-year-old, son of Scotland great Gordon, on board as he prepares for his first full season in charge. Strachan has spent the past six years on Celtic’s staff under Neil Lennon, Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers and most recently Martin O’Neill.
A former midfielder with spells at Coventry and Hartlepool, Strachan previously served as Darren Ferguson’s assistant at Doncaster Rovers and Peterborough.
Morrison has been moving to lock in his coaching team before pre-season. He remains hopeful Matt Gill will stay after the pair worked effectively at the end of last season to secure Championship safety.
He is also interested in adding former Middlesbrough team-mate Tony McMahon to a role. McMahon, who lifted the FA Youth Cup alongside Morrison in 2004, was most recently director of football at York City.
Appointed permanent head coach at season’s end, Morrison had already said the staff was likely to be reshuffled this summer. During the run-in he opted against further additions, saying the group could be tweaked but he saw no need to bring anyone in then.
Albion are also close to their first summer signings, with deals for strikers Barney Stewart and Jimmy-Jay Morgan. Stewart is poised to join from Falkirk for a seven-figure fee, with 20-year-old Morgan arriving from Chelsea for around £1.3 million.
