West Bromwich Albion could face a points deduction after reports of an alleged breach of the EFL’s Profitability and Sustainability rules, with uncertainty over timing and potential sanctions.

The club said in a statement that it believes it has fully complied with the rules and will continue to co-operate with the EFL’s Club Financial Reporting Unit to resolve the issue.

Under PSR, clubs have until 31 December to file annual accounts for the 24/25 season, which are then assessed. If a breach is identified, a compliance report is issued, the club has 14 days to respond, and a hearing must be held within 28 days.

That timetable means any hearing could fall after the final day of the season. A breach of up to £2 million carries a three-point penalty, rising to a four-point deduction at £4 million. Mitigation can apply if losses reduce year on year, which could return one point, and Albion have worked under Shilen Patel and Bilkul Football to cut losses after the previous ownership.

For now, Albion’s priority is points on the board in the final four matches. Any deduction would likely be challenged first via an EFL appeal, and court action could follow. Securing safety on the pitch remains the target for James Morrison’s side, aiming to finish above the bottom three.
