West Bromwich Albion are expected to support a proposed overhaul of Championship financial rules. ExpressAndStar.com understands the club plan to back a switch to a squad cost ratio when teams vote on Friday, aligning with Premier League practice.

The squad cost ratio would cap player costs at 85 per cent of football revenue and allow a £10m annual capital injection to bolster spending.

Albion have advocated the change since Shilen Patel’s Bilkul Football bought the club from Guochuan Lai more than two years ago.

The proposal requires at least 16 of the 24 clubs to pass. Many in the second tier want greater scope to invest in pursuit of promotion.

PSR has operated since 2017/18. Albion were docked two points last month for breaching the £39m three-year loss limit. They maintain their innocence but, after receiving written reasons last week, chose not to appeal having already secured safety.

Premier League clubs voted in November to adopt the squad cost ratio, replacing PSR that permitted £105m losses over three years. Albion’s position under PSR was forecast to ease from this summer, while the new model would give owners greater licence to speculate, with more weight on revenue.
