Rubin Colwill had been linked with West Ham earlier in the window, but the talented attacking midfielder now looks set to stay with Cardiff.
West Ham are set for a busy end to the transfer window as they look to beef up Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad for what they expect will be a promotion push.
The 2-2 draw with Burnley on the opening day highlighted the lack of depth at the club, although deals for Arne Engels and Joel Piroe since the game will certainly help.
The sales of Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville have given West Ham a big budget to work with, but they are still seeking value in the market, and the recruitment team will have specific areas in mind that they want to address.

However, with Piroe and Engels through the door, it seems unlikely that they will pursue a move for Cardiff’s Rubin Colwill, who was believed to be on their radar earlier in the window.
Even though Colwill is a different type of player, it’s hard to see where he would fit in Nuno’s best XI, and he wouldn’t swap the Welsh capital for the English one without guarantees of first-team football.
But, that shows West Ham are on the lookout for more creativity, even if it’s hard to imagine that goals will be a major problem with Jarrod Bowen, Piroe, Manor Solomon and Taty Castellanos at the club.
And, if that is the front four, Nuno will need a more disciplined midfield pairing to ensure the side has the right balance.

Therefore, Colwill looks certain to stay at Cardiff, and, in truth, that’s probably the best thing for his development right now, as he will get minutes.
Brian Barry-Murphy has implemented a stylish brand of football at Cardiff, and it’s perfectly suited to Colwill, who is an elegant attacking midfielder who enjoys getting on the ball as much as possible and has been liberated by added responsibility and creative freedom under the Irishman's watch
Of course, there are areas of his game that he must improve, but Colwill has taken major strides forward in the past year or two in trying to fulfil his potential, adding consistency and refining his end product infront of goal.
At 24, Colwill is no longer a kid, and whilst everyone knows about his ability, it feels like he is at a point in his career where he needs to show his talent consistently. To be fair, he did that last season, in which he often captained the side. but he must do it in the Championship.
After a disrupted pre-season, Colwill got off to the perfect start on Monday night, with a brilliant free-kick to rescue a point for the Bluebirds against Wrexham after appearing from the bench, and it could be the perfect confidence boost for the mercurial playmaker.

A lot of transfers are about timing, and West Ham’s interest in Colwill came at a time when there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the club.
The club were still dealing with the fallout of relegation, and they would’ve been looking at a host of players who could’ve improved the squad, so it’s no surprise Colwill’s name was on their radar.
But, since then, they’ve had a more settled approach, and, as outlined above, they appear to be going down a route where they will play with two forwards and traditional wingers, so a player like Colwill would not have been a priority.
This is something they may revisit in the future, but, if they did win promotion, it’s hard to imagine he will be a priority then. So, it could be a missed opportunity for West Ham, although they will still fancy their chances of going up this season.

As for Colwill, there’s no reason why he can’t reach the Premier League in the near future, and that will no doubt be the dream this season.
The new play-off format will have a host of clubs believing they can reach the top flight, and whilst Cardiff are newly-promoted, they will fall into that category.
But, even if they don’t go up, Colwill has the ability to earn a move to that level in the future, and he would no doubt net the Bluebirds a substantial fee in the process.
So, it will be interesting to see how this season plays out for Colwill and Cardiff, but he will be determined to show West Ham that they will regret not pushing to bring him in.
