West Ham United have decided to retain Nuno Espirito Santo despite relegation, confirmed after Sunday’s win over Leeds United. The club said in a statement that he will remain in charge.

Leeds lost 3-0 at the London Stadium and still finished 14th on 47 points. West Ham went down despite that result, with Tottenham Hotspur also winning at home to Everton.

Nuno met senior figures on Monday for post-relegation talks. Planning for next season began immediately after the final whistle, and the head coach has committed to the club.

He is highly motivated to lead an instant return to the Premier League, with an immediate return set as the clear goal. He previously spent one season in the Championship and won the 2018 title with Wolverhampton Wanderers on 99 points.

There have been broader signs of improvement in recent months, including 25 points from the final 17 league games, a 1.47 points-per-game rate that would pace to seventh across a season. Squad mentality and togetherness have also improved since January.
