It’s never a good sign when a manager – especially a Chelsea manager – is being asked if his team “can” beat their upcoming opposition.
But that’s what happened to Liam Rosenior in today’s press conference previewing this Sunday’s game against Man City. You can understand why he’s been asked – his team are in terrible form and City are clicking into gear. As you’d expect, Rosenior was defiant.
“Of course we can [beat City]. We’re a very good team, we’ve gone through a difficult run. When I analyse the games we have had, we’ve caused every team problems but not had the results for that.”
On Pep Guardiola, Rosenior had the sort of reverence you’d expect:
“He’s won trophies, he’s reinvigorated the team, he’s refreshed the team and also had time to put his style together. He’s an unbelievable manager and one you look to.”
And finally, on Chelsea’s horrible record against Man City…
“No, that’s in the past. The record that’s happened before has no relevance on the game.”
Chelsea had a rare free midweek, and Rosenior explained what he had had his players doing with that opportunity.
Rosenior also spoke about some of his injured players, giving updates on the likes of Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah ahead of the Man City game.
