Wycombe have announced the signing of Ewan Henderson from relegated Beerschot. The 25-year-old Scottish midfielder leaves Belgium for League One and could prove to be a shrewd piece of business for the English club. The former Hibernian midfielder has spent the last two seasons in Belgian football with two clubs that have had off field difficulties.
Henderson started his career with Celtic but never made the grade in Glasgow, ending up in Edinburgh with Hibs in 2022. After a decent 2022/2023 season, with four goals and four assists in 35 games, he moved to Oostende. Henderson was a bright spark for Oostende in a campaign that would prove to be their final one, as they were subsequently declared bankrupt and ceased to exist. The side have since returned under a new name, but in the lower reaches of Belgian football. During that final year Henderson grabbed seven goals in 30 games and was a huge factor in their surprise appearance in the Belgian Cup semi-finals. His form in the second tier earned him a move to Beerschot and the Pro League during the 2024/2025 campaign.
However, Henderson didn’t get much run time and struggled for a poor Beerschot side under Dirk Kuyt. He did contribute three goals and three assists, but in truth Beerschot did not have a squad capable of competing and in many ways there was little direction to their recruitment. We did see glimpses of what Henderson could do and it was clear he wanted to drive the side forward and look to score/create where possible. During the relegation play-offs, with Beerschot relegated and the pressure off, we got to see the best of Henderson. He was excellent in the sides 4-2 win over Cercle Brugge where he grabbed two assists.
Wycombe will get a versatile player who can play either centrally or out wide. Henderson likes to get on the ball often and should be able to adapt comfortably to League One level. This level is closer to the Challenger Pro League than the Pro League and Henderson should, in theory, be one of the better players in the league. At just 25-years of age, there is still more to come from the Scottish midfielder/winger. His two years in difficult circumstances in Belgium should prove to be ‘character’ building and a more settled environment like Wycombe could prove to be beneficial for Henderson.
