Even though the German knew he was about to depart the Owls, his work ethic shone through ahead of the 2025-26 season

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has issued some stunning revelations into what life was really like in the dugout at Hillsborough - including what happened in the final few weeks and months of his time in South Yorkshire.

The highly-rated German coach was somewhat idolised by many of the Wednesday fanbase, having saved the club from relegation to League One in the 2023-24 season, before guiding them to mid-table of the Championship in 2024-25 - despite the latter stages of the campaign showing what was to come under owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Late March 2025 saw the first instance where wages would not be paid on time to players and staff, with Chansiri citing cash flow problems as the reason for the delay, and further instances would occur in May, June and July - all of which contributed to the club not being able to bring in any new signings over the summer aside from emergency loanee goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, as well as Man United's teenage left-back Harry Amass.

Danny Rohl reveals what he did prior to Sheffield Wednesday exit

The issues behind the scenes at Wednesday saw then-head coach Rohl look to leave the club, with Chansiri himself refusing to discuss the German's future at the club, which led to him seeking an exit route from the stricken second tier outfit.

Various avenues in the form of other clubs shut themselves off though from appointing Rohl, and to the surprise of many, he returned to work at the training ground during pre-season with a skeleton squad to work with.

It wouldn't be for long though, as two weeks later on July 29, Rohl's departure was announced just over a week before the new season began - and it appears that it was always going to be the case.

An exclusive interview with Rohl via The Times has revealed that Rohl knew he was departing the club as soon as a severance package was agreed with Wednesday owner Chansiri, hence why he returned to work out of the blue to honour his contract.

And despite knowing he was heading for the Hillsborough exit, it was also revealed that Rohl cut short his family holiday in the summer and held a mammoth 40 meetings with players and staff to prepare them for the upcoming campaign, and that has perhaps helped his former assistant Pedersen to undergo a smooth transition into the dugout after he was quickly announced as his successor.

Danny Rohl's Sheffield Wednesday work holds him in a good light - a Championship return feels inevitable

Given what has happened in recent months, it's clear to see that Rohl did well to work as long as he could with Chansiri, who promised so much in the early stages of his ownership of Wednesday but has faltered as time has gone on.

Rohl was already some levels above the club's previous head coach Xisco Munoz, who failed to win any of his 12 matches in charge of the club prior to his sacking, but up until the January transfer window of 2025, it looked as though Wednesday may have been going places.

This year though has been nothing short of a disaster for Sheffield Wednesday, whose fans will be hoping new ownership comes sooner rather than later, and that Chansiri is co-operative when it comes to a sale.

You get the sense though that given the Championship manager merry-go-round is always pretty volatile a few months into a new season, it may not be long until Rohl is courted by other clubs in the second tier of English football, and that a reunion - should the right job come along - with Wednesday could be sooner rather than later as a rival coach.
