Didier Reynaud’s Un siècle sur le toit de l’Europe reimagines ASSE’s fate had the 1976 final ended differently.

According to Le Progres, the Stéphanois author sets this uchronia in 2076, during centenary commemorations of the match against Bayern.

In his scenario, Hampden Park’s square posts are no longer a curse, Bayern’s shots bounce away, not those of Revelli and Santini.

The book asks whether triumph that night could have opened the door to a colossal European honours list and reshaped Saint-Étienne.

Reynaud, an ASSE supporter, journalist and writer, uses that what-if as the novel’s starting point.
