Middlesbrough already have one eye on the January transfer market

Middlesbrough’s head of football Kieran Scott has discussed the club’s January transfer plans already.

Boro have made a strong start to the new Championship campaign, with the team earning an impressive 13 points from a possible 15 under new manager Rob Edwards.

It was a busy summer transfer market for the Teesside outfit, who replaced Michael Carrick as manager before bringing in eight new permanent additions to the first team squad, as well as three loanees.

Middlesbrough will be hoping that Edwards can guide the team back to the Premier League for the first time since their relegation in 2017.

Boro finished 10th in the table last season, missing out on a play-off place under Carrick by just four points.

Middlesbrough’s January plans revealed

Scott has claimed that Middlesbrough are already weighing up the various permutations that could happen in the winter market.

He revealed that discussions have been held with chief scout Ian Breckin and head of recruitment Chris Jones on their strategy for the winter market.

"We were actually talking about it yesterday," said Scott, via the club’s official podcast.

"We went through a lot yesterday on situations.

"We're planning for January.

“There are a couple of positions we feel we can be ready for, but then we spoke through every permutation that could happen and what we're going to do if that comes.

"Ian [Breckin] is in with us as well so that obviously sets him off and what he can add to the list that's already there.

“We're always looking to add to the list that's there.

"But yeah we're plotting for January.”

However, Scott claimed that they are not thinking about next summer yet, and that only players with expiring contracts are on their mind when it comes to the end of the campaign: “We won't plot for the summer just yet.

“The only thing we spoke about in the summer is out of contract players that will be free in the summer and who we really like and who we'll speak to and do what we need to do.

"January stuff we're on with now and we'll see what happens.

“Hopefully we're top of the league, nobody wants to leave and we don't have to do anything!"

Middlesbrough’s promotion ambitions

Middlesbrough will have their sights set on promotion to the Premier League this season, particularly with their impressive start.

New signings include the likes of David Strelec, Adilson Malanda, Sontje Hansen and Abdoulaye Kanté.

Kaly Sene, Jon McLaughlin, Alfie Jones and Callum Brittain have also been signed on a permanent basis, with Sverre Nypan, Matt Targett and Alan Browne arriving on loan.

Next up for Edwards’ side is a home clash against West Brom on Friday night in an 8pm kick-off.

January window could be pivotal for Middlesbrough

It is encouraging for supporters that Middlesbrough are already considering how to potentially improve the side in January given their strong start to the season.

It has been a difficult couple of years for the club as they’ve just narrowly missed out on a top six finish in consecutive campaigns under ex-boss Carrick.

They’ve also sold a lot of their high profile players, with the likes of Morgan Rogers and Emmanuel Latte Lath both leaving midway through the season.
