Despite their superior squad on paper, the odds looked to be firmly stacked against England as they battled an in-form co-host at their high-altitude Estadio Azteca fortress, where Mexico had only lost two of 89 previous competitive matches dating back 60 years.

But Thomas Tuchel’s side defied their status in many people’s eyes as underdogs to deliver one of their best World Cup performances in spite of a one-hour weather delay, coming out on top 3-2 in a pulsating and feisty contest despite playing most of the second half with 10 men after Jarell Quansah’s red card following a VAR review for a high tackle on Jesus Gallardo.

England went 2-0 in front in the first half after soaking up some early pressure, with Jude Bellingham scoring twice in the space of just 98 seconds before they were pegged back prior to half-time thanks to Julian Quinones’ thumping effort.

Quansah’s dismissal looked to have opened the door for Mexico to equalise and potentially take control, but they fell further behind when Harry Kane dispatched a penalty following Raul Rangel’s foul on Anthony Gordon.

Kane himself then kicked the foot of Brian Gutierrez to give away a spot-kick that was converted by Raul Jimenez, with England going on to display an incredible defensive effort to dig in with the likes of Jordan Pickford and substitute Dan Burn in imperious form.

It was just the tonic England needed after they somewhat laboured to the top of Group L and then were almost dumped out of the World Cup in embarrassing fashion by DR Congo in the round of 32.

Equally as confident will be a Norway team who are riding a wave of serious momentum at only their fourth World Cup finals and first since 1998, with Erling Haaland in sublime form to stun Brazil 2-1 in New Jersey on Sunday.

The Leeds-born Manchester City talisman emphatically won his latest duel with Arsenal nemesis Gabriel, notching two excellent late efforts to guide Norway - who finished as runners-up to France in Group I and pipped Ivory Coast in the last 32 - into the quarter-finals for the first time.

It will be the first meeting of any kind between England and Norway since September 2014, when Wayne Rooney’s second-half penalty secured a 1-0 friendly win in front of a low crowd at Wembley.

They also met in Oslo two years previously with the same result, courtesy of Ashley Young’s early effort in a warm-up outing for Euro 2012. Those are the only games between them this century - the last fixture before that was in 1995.

England and Norway have not locked horns competitively since qualification for the 1994 World Cup, with England losing 2-0 in Oslo en route to failing to book their place in the USA.

What time do England play Norway at World Cup on Saturday?

England face Norway in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, July 11.

The game takes place at Miami Stadium - AKA Hard Rock Stadium, the 64,478-capacity home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 5pm local time (ET), which is 10pm BST in the UK.

Still a late night for England fans at home, but much more bearable than the delayed Mexico clash that did not begin until 2am (7pm local time) due to stormy weather in Mexico City.
