LaLiga EA Sports returns on Saturday 15 August. Alavés host Getafe at Mendizorroza at 19:30, and the familiar question looms over who strikes first.

As reported by as.com, the final round falls on the weekend of 30 May.

In principle the first goal should come from an Alavés or Getafe player, although Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano could yet provide it in the later kick-off at 21:30.

The opening weeks often pit evenly matched sides still short of rhythm, so a quick start can be crucial.

The past 32 seasons have thrown up curiosities. Real Madrid have conceded the campaign’s first goal five times, yet have also scored it on four occasions, and have not played the curtain-raiser since 2009, when Raúl scored against Deportivo.

Valencia’s Miguel Ángel Angulo is the only player to repeat the feat, striking first in 1998/99 and 2001/02. The first came in a 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid, and that season ended with Valencia beating Atlético 3-0 in the Copa del Rey final. The second was a 1-0 victory against Real Madrid in a title-winning campaign.

In August 2004 the Vicente Calderón staged the opener, Atlético Madrid hosting a Málaga side led by Gregorio Manzano, who would later take the Atlético job. Just before half-time goalkeeper Calatayud put through his own net, the only time in the past 32 years the first strike has been an own goal.
