Why Grêmio are set to swap Libra for FFU

Grêmio have resolved to leave Libra for FFU, Futebol Forte União, in collective talks over Campeonato Brasileiro broadcast rights, with the club’s Deliberative Council due to vote on 17 March.

According to Globo.com, the main driver is the belief that FFU has delivered stronger early negotiations. The decision is supported by the club’s numbers and the input of CEO Alex Leitão, who represented clubs in FFU, then known as LFU, in 2024 while at Athletico-PR.

Other considerations exist but are viewed as secondary to new revenue potential. Immediate cash is also valued, with an offer tied to advancing 10% of TV income. The payout would relate to a 45-year exploitation term, matching the remaining contracts held by clubs already in FFU, with Inter, which signed in 2023, receiving R$ 109 million for 50 years.

A further, lesser factor is the withdrawn Daycoval proposal to buy 5% of Libra clubs’ TV rights, an advance spanning 15 years that did not materialise. Friction inside Libra surfaced in 2025 when Flamengo contested revenue distribution in court, triggering a temporary R$ 6 million freeze for Grêmio that contributed to a delayed September wage bill.

The current hierarchy does not regard Flamengo’s position as decisive, stressing each club will pursue its own interests, as Grêmio intends with its commercial rights. The matter is deemed strategic, so the vote has been postponed to give the board more time to speak with councillors.

If approved, Grêmio would take a seat in FFU immediately, while its existing TV contract would remain in place until 2029. The meeting is scheduled at the Arena, with first call at 19:00 and second at 19:30.
