Sheffield Wednesday are facing the threat of going into administration unless a £7.3 million repayment is made
Sheffield Wednesday are facing the threat of being put in administration with the looming pressure of a 30 September payment deadline.
The Owls have endured a difficult 2025, with financial issues behind the scenes hampering their ability to compete on the pitch.
Players received late payments of wages for multiple months this year, which led to some key figures handing in their notice in order to terminate their contracts.
Other players like Djeidi Gassama were also sold to Rangers for a reported £2.5 million, without any replacements arriving.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has been put under significant pressure from supporters to sell his stake in the Yorkshire outfit, but he remains in charge for the time being despite the possibility of administration now being faced.
It was reported by The Star earlier this month that Sheffield Wednesday are facing the possibility of going into administration due to a £7.3 million repayment that is due by 30 September.
It has been claimed that some grace may be given to the Owls to give them a bit more time to meet their obligations, but they could be in serious trouble if they are unable to secure the repayment.
It is understood that the club essentially mortgaged their Hillsborough stadium in order to take out a loan in September 2020, which was originally worth £6.4 million.
This repayment was simply rolled over every year up to now, with it growing to £7.3 million due to interest, and now a return is being sought due to the club’s financial issues.
The lender remains unnamed at this stage, although it has been reported that New Avenue Projects are acting on their behalf, effectively working as a broker on the deal.
The lender could have chosen to let the repayment roll over yet again for this year, but they have potentially taken this stance out of fear that they will miss out if Sheffield Wednesday run out of money in the future.
The punishment for failing to meet this payment is reportedly varied, with multiple options still on the table.
However, administration is one of those options, along with possibly appointing a receiver over Hillsborough.
This could lead to the club losing ownership of their home ground, or possibly having to pay rent to continue using it.
Chansiri has struggled to maintain the financial health of Sheffield Wednesday, with cashflow issues leading to a number of problems for the club.
It has been reported that John Textor is interested in a takeover of the Yorkshire outfit, but no deal has yet been agreed with the Thai businessman, who has set a £100 million asking price.
While wages have been an issue for the Owls this year, it is understood that the Championship side’s HMRC and salary commitments are currently in order.
It has also been claimed that Chansiri is seeking external investment that could allow him to maintain control of the club.
