On Monday evening, the German national team will play its first knockout match at the 2026 World Cup. To ensure that everything goes according to plan against Paraguay, the team held a special training session the day before. Among those involved were Jamal Musiala and Jonas Urbig

Urbig, the FC Bayern goalkeeper, is not part of the official DFB roster for this World Cup. However, he has traveled with the team as a training goalkeeper so that special sessions and drills can be carried out as planned.

One such session took place on Sunday at the DFB headquarters, asreported by BILD —specifically after the regular training session.

DFB special training session aims to boost efficiency

After a group stage marked by both highs and lows, not every expert is convinced by the DFB squad. Two wins and a draw are decent, but nothing more. Especially on offense, there wasn’t much to see against Ecuador or the Ivory Coast.

There were too many turnovers, too many imprecise shots, and problems with teamwork in the final third. This is one of the reasons why special training was scheduled for some DFB players. Jonas Urbig was in goal, and attacking stars like Leroy Sané, Florian Wirtz, and Musiala practiced passes, attacking scenarios, and shots on goal once again.

Such an extra training session is nothing new; even before the match against Curaçao, Nagelsmann had his offensive players “warm up their shooting.” That was followed by a 7-1 victory. While a similar result against Paraguay is unlikely, the national team coach wants to leave no stone unturned in getting his attacking talents into top form.

DFB Director Rudi Völler expressed confidence on this matter over the weekend. “You can tell with Florian and Jamal that they’re not that far off from top form. You get the feeling they’re close. Jamal has already scored a goal,” he explained. So now it’s time to build on that.
