Sky Sports, Sport Bild, and Kicker are all now currently reporting that AC Milan are leading the race to acquire West Ham United striker Niclas Füllkrug in the coming January transfer window. Füllkrug was also coveted by Bundesliga outfits VfL Wolfsburg and FC Augsburg; both in urgent need of attacking assistance. It now looks as if both German clubs will come up empty.
Wolfsburg have been able to overcome some recently chaotic times in the club’s front office and officially completed their first January signing today. The Lower Saxon club’s recent hiring of Füllkrug’s former Hannover teammate Pirmin Schwegler to serve as sporting director was supposed to help Wolfsburg in their pursuit of Füllkrug, who is originally from the German state of Lower Saxony.
Augsburg’s interest is said to have cooled, but the Fuggerstädter still must find someway of acquiring a natural No. 9. Neither Philipp Tietz nor Samuel Essende have been able to establish themselves at the position. Non natural forwards Mert Kömür (2 goals), Anton Kade (2 goals), and Fabian Rieder (3 goals) have done much better than the two natural center forwards. Tietz and Essende have only scored a goal apiece.
Sources reporting on the latest rumor report that AC Milan are currently negotiating a loan with a purchase option for the 32-year-old. The sources further note that Füllkrug prefers to move to the Serie A and has already agreed to terms with the Rossoneri. Augsburg and Wolfsburg will simply have to look elsewhere as the opening of the transfer window approaches.
