The season has got off to a great start with seven points from three ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga matches, but now the biggest challenge yet lies ahead as serial champions SKN St. Pölten are visiting the Red Bull Football Academy on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Headline writers would bill it as a clash between league leaders and the dominant force in Austrian women's football. Duscan Pavlovic's protégés are currently sitting at the top of the table – partly because the big match between Austria Vienna and St. Pölten had to be postponed due to their European Cup commitments. There is no doubting who go into the game as favourites, though. The team led by Lisa Alzner, a native of Salzburg who has been at the helm of the Wolves since the beginning of the year, has suffered only two defeats in domestic football since May 2018. The last one was a 1-2 defeat against Vienna in November. Even though there have been lots of comings and goings at the top of the league over the summer, the eleventh double in a row should be well within reach.
While our team wants to shock SKN St. Pölten – as FC Bergheim managed to do at home last season with a proud 0-0 draw – St. Pölten want to prepare as well as possible for Champions League qualification. The following Thursday, Austria's champions will face Denmark's champions, Fortuna Hjörring, for a place in the UEFA Women's Champions League.
As is well known, admission to the academy is free, and our match will of course be broadcast on ÖFB TV.
St. Pölten have set the pace in this league for years, and we have a lot of respect for them. For us, it's a big challenge and at the same time a huge opportunity to measure ourselves against the best. We're focusing on ourselves, want to be brave and give everything as a team. Games like this are an important part of our development – we're looking forward to the task!
