Wolves Women fell short of the National League Northern Premier Division title on the final day, but a one-off play-off now offers a final route to promotion. According to ExpressAndStar.com, they will meet Southern Division side Plymouth for a place in WSL2.

Beth Merrick, Amber Hughes and Amy Sims scored in a 3-0 win over Halifax, but Burnley beat Stoke 3-0 to finish top by a point. Wolves also ended with a better goal difference.

With the Women’s Super League expanding next season, an extra promotion place applies this year only. The play-off is at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium on bank holiday Monday, 4 May, 1pm, with subsidised coach travel priced at £10.

Head coach Dan McNamara hailed 61 points and 20 wins from 22, congratulated Burnley and said missing out by a point was tough. He felt Wolves merited more but said the squad will train on, is excited and ready for a huge game.

Elsewhere, Albion drew 0-0 with Middlesbrough and Sporting Khalsa finished bottom after a 6-0 defeat at Loughborough Lightning.

In WSL2, promotion-chasing Birmingham City lost 3-0 at home to Ipswich Town in their final home game. In Division One Midlands, Kidderminster Harriers won 2-1 at Sutton Coldfield to finish ninth, while relegated Stourbridge were beaten 7-0 at champions Peterborough United.

In the West Midlands League, Hednesford Town lost 1-0 at Shifnal Town. Chasetown thrashed Rugby Town 6-0, Walsall beat Newcastle Town 1-0, and Halesowen Town lost 3-2 at leaders Knowle.
