Fans Stateside were treated to three more standout matches, but what did UK watchers miss out on?
UK fans who did not stay up overnight to watch the World Cup missed out on history and, arguably, the best individual performance of the tournament so far.
Prior to making his 27th appearance at the world's biggest tournament, Lionel Messi had been overtaken by Kylian Mbappe in the rankings for World Cup all-time top scorer after the Frenchman had netted twice against Senegal on Tuesday night, taking his tally to 14.
Messi thought he had opened the scoring after only five minutes, but was denied by a tight offside call after a composed finish into the bottom corner. He did open the scoring after 17 minutes as he linked up with Inter Miami team-mate Rodrigo de Paul and fired a 20-yard effort into the roof of the net.
Fares Chaibi wasted an excellent chance to equalise and, at the other end, Thiago Almada fired over before the break. Lautaro Martinez shot straight at Algeria goalkeeper Zidane – the son of France World Cup winner Zinedine – who also saved well from Alexis Mac Allister on the hour mark, only for Messi to react quickest and turn in the rebound.
Mac Allister’s defence-splitting pass sent Messi clear after 66 minutes, but Zidane was equal to his effort and referee Szymon Marciniak waved away the Inter Miami forward’s penalty claims after Manchester City defender Rayan Ait-Nouri sent him tumbling in the box. Messi’s moment did finally arrive in the 76th minute as he collected Nicolas Gonzalez’s pass and fired a low effort into the bottom corner.
As such, Messi now holds the all-time World Cup scoring record with Germany's Miroslav Klose on 16 and has the chance to claim it outright against Austria next Monday.
Elsewhere, Iraq scored their first World Cup goal since 1986 when Aymen Hussein briefly had his nation on level terms against Norway, cancelling out Erling Haaland's opener six minutes before the break.
However, hopes of a first-ever World Cup point were shattered moments later as Haaland grabbed his second and Norway - competing at the showpiece for the first time since 1998 - ran out 4-1 winners.
Austria 3-1 Jordan
In the day’s final game, Jordan were on course to pick up a point on their World Cup debut after Ali Olwan had equalised early in the second half.
But an own goal from Yazan Al-Arab 14 minutes from time and a Marko Arnautovic penalty in the 12th minute of stoppage time earned Austria all three points in Santa Clara.
