The 2026 World Cup passed the five million mark for total attendance during the France v Sweden tie in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Before the tournament, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said he expected about seven million spectators overall.

The cumulative crowd now stands at 5,048,079 after 80,663 attended the match.

The previous record was 3,587,538, set in 1994 in the United States.

Excluding Tuesday, matches at this edition in the United States, Mexico and Canada had averaged 64,511 spectators.

Stadiums have been 99.7% full despite a pre-tournament controversy over ticket prices, and 27 matches remain.

The biggest attendances so far were for Uzbekistan v Colombia, Mexico v South Africa and Czechia v Mexico at the Azteca in Mexico.
