As is the case in every transfer window, Wrexham will face some difficult decisions this summer.

We know those who won’t be coming back after the club revealed those names on its website earlier this month. Those won’t be the only names departing the North of Wales by the time next season hits.

Down the stretch of the campaign, we saw exactly what Callum Doyle brings to the table and why Phil Parkinson was so keen to sign him. His performances, both domestically and in the FA Cup, could see many big clubs throw big money at Wrexham to try to sign him this summer.

Callum Doyle came to Wrexham with plenty of hype

For a side heading into their first Championship campaign in decades, they knew they needed to find some experience and exceptional quality at the back. Callum Doyle has that in abundance. His ability to play out from the back, along with his passing range, and versatility were all skills Phil Parkinson knew would be invaluable.

Doyle’s technical ability was evident from a young age at the Manchester City academy, while Championship fans and managers marveled at his talent. Not only was he technically gifted, though, but he also had a strong aerial presence and was exceptional at recovery.

Along with his outstanding technical ability, Doyle has a winning pedigree. He was a part of Leicester City’s Championship promotional campaign in 2023-24 while also capturing the U-19 European Championship with England. He also came with close to 100 appearances in the second tier prior to the 2025 summer transfer window. When you factor all of that in, it’s no wonder he was on Wrexham’s radar.

Wrexham made a huge investment in Callum Doyle

For a player of Doyle’s pedigree and background, one had to have known that his price tag to come to Wrexham would be high. The club announced his signing last August, with ESPN reporting that his fee would be £7.5 million on a four-year contract. As part of the deal, Manchester City included a clause that gives the Red Dragons an option to re-sign him. In addition to that, the Sky Blues receive 25% of any future sales for him.

Early into this season, there were understandably questions about whether the club’s financial investment in him would pay off. Wrexham began the season poorly, capturing just two of their opening 10 matches in the Championship. Doyle was among those who seemed to struggle early on as he and his team’s backline were often exposed and seen as a huge liability. Doyle’s lowest point came during an October meeting with Oxford United when he was sent off for a reckless tackle with just over 20 minutes remaining.

As bad as he looked back then, we saw as the campaign wore on exactly why Wrexham pursued him over the summer. From the start of 2026, especially, we witnessed just how special Doyle was as he showed his eye for goal in a victory over Queens Park Rangers.

That was just the beginning of what we would see from the youngster. In the FA Cup against Chelsea, over a month later, he showed not only his exceptional skill but also an ability to put it all together in the big moments, setting up their opening goal by Sam Smith.

Meanwhile, his brilliant touch later in the match nearly propelled them to what might have been its most famous upset in club history.

While Chelsea came back and won the day, we witnessed on that occasion and down the stretch of the campaign, exactly why everyone has been saying Doyle is destined for great things.

Unsurprisingly, Doyle was named to the Championship Team of the Year this past season.

Wrexham will be faced with a difficult Callum Doyle exit situation

He may be committed to Wrexham for the foreseeable future, but that might not mean anything if the right offer or club comes knocking. That’s a reality that even some of Doyle’s teammates believe is a distinct possibility.

Earlier this month, the BBC shared Dom Hyam’s views about Doyle ahead of the transfer window. “He's technically so calm. He's a beast as well, and he's young,” said the Scottish defender. He went on to say that for that reason, Doyle will “unfortunately attract some big clubs.”

The suggestion seems to imply that those big clubs will come from the Premier League, though it remains to be seen who that could be. It would not come as a shock to those who’ve played with or against him that he could feature in the top-flight very soon. In 2024, former Premier League top scorer Chris Sutton said that Doyle would be “playing in the Premier League.”

While it didn’t happen that following season as the ex-Blackburn Rovers man predicted, his time in that competition could be coming soon.

As valuable as he was to Wrexham, almost making the promotional playoffs, it’s possible the club could sell him. Doyle’s position may not be one of the Red Dragons have to address, but there are others they do. If offers come in for him, it’s something they surely must at least entertain.

Footballers at Doyle’s age dream of getting to the Premier League. If a top-flight team calls the Red Dragons about him, you’d have to think that would come with a big financial offer. That money could come in handy to address areas like the wing-back spot, among others.

As big a part as he is for this club, too, an opportunity to be in the Premier League sooner is one Doyle would be foolish not to at least consider. While there is value in biding your time before playing in the Premier League, if that opportunity presents itself, many will find it hard to say no.

With the summer transfer window opening on June 15, what happens to Doyle will be of great interest to Wrexham supporters. Parkinson and the staff will have a lot to think about on that matter. This summer could tell us just how badly the club want Doyle in North Wales, and vice versa.
