Wrexham close to signing Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson | OneFootball

Anthony Patterson is expected to undergo a medical on Monday after a deal was struck with Sunderland for a potential club-record transfer.

According to NY Times, the 26-year-old was given permission to speak to the Welsh club after talks that began earlier in the summer. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall.

An academy graduate, Patterson became Sunderland's first-choice goalkeeper in the second half of 2021-22. He played a key part in their 2025 promotion, making two vital saves in the play-off final win over Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium.

He lost the No 1 spot after Robin Roefs arrived a year ago. Patterson featured off the bench against Wrexham in the final friendly of the USA tour in Philadelphia, which Sunderland won 1-0.

Millwall and Rangers have also been linked with him. He made 16 appearances during his Millwall loan after a January move, including both play-off semi-final legs against Hull City.

Sources in the North East suggest the fee will be £8 million, eclipsing Wrexham's previous record £7.5 million for Nathan Broadhead a little under a year ago. If there are no late hitches, Patterson would be Wrexham's third summer signing after Crystal Palace wing-back Danny Imray and Preston North End captain Ben Whiteman.

Wrexham conceded 65 league goals with Arthur Okonkwo and Danny Ward between the posts last season, with 17 Championship teams faring better.
