Manchester City’s summer transfer window and links to various names across Europe has just gotten a whole lot more exciting following recent comments.
The Premier League champions are bracing themselves for an off-season of significant change which has already started with confirmed alterations in the boardroom positions and at the heart of Pep Guardiola’s creative engine room.
Former Sporting CP director of football Hugo Viana is due to take up the same role at Manchester City this summer as Txiki Begiristain steps aside from a position that he has successfully overseen for the last 12 seasons.
Earlier this month there was also confirmation from both the player and the club that Manchester City had decided not to renew their contractual agreement with all-time legend Kevin De Bruyne, allowing the 33-year-old to exit on a free transfer this summer.
A whole host of names have been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium in light of De Bruyne’s pending departure, and while the focus has largely been put on Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, one of his Bundesliga colleagues has also been tipped for interest.
Speaking during a recent conversation with Sky in Germany, Xavi Simons has kept his own future entirely open despite only joining RB Leipzig on a permanent agreement during the January transfer window, amid talk of City interest this summer.
“I’m still a young player, I have many dreams and the club knows that,” the Netherlands international told reporters. “But right now, the most important thing for me is to play well in the upcoming games.”
The versatile attacking midfielder continued, “Then we have the international matches, and after that we’ll sit down and see what happens.”
Additional details provided by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reveal that RB Leipzig want a transfer fee of around €80 million for Xavi Simons, if the player decides to leave the club this summer – with a departure a possibility.
Reports earlier in April suggested that Manchester City had been monitoring the performances of the Netherlands star over the course of the last few months, while a separate report indicated that the player was on a shortlist of potential Kevin De Bruyne replacements.
Manchester City also have their eyes on names much closer to home too, with the understanding in various quarters being that the club will be frontrunners in the chase to sign Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White when the season ends.
The Englishman is also expected to field transfer interest from the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, although the finances available to Etihad officials would likely stump any offers from Old Trafford or Anfield.
