The show of faith in Ange-Yoan Bonny and Francesco Pio Esposito in attack epitomizes the change in strategy at Inter Milan.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Inter Milan have certainly not had any problems relying on experienced players in recent years.
The club’s policy of targeting low-cost and free transfer signings has led them to bring in veteran players in every area of the pitch.
That has often worked wonders in terms of “value for money.” However, in attack, that hasn’t quite been the case.
Last season, Inter had five strikers. Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram were the clear first-choice partnership, albeit sometimes looking tired.
Meanwhile, the vastly experienced trio of Marko Arnautovic, Mehdi Taremi, and Joaquin Correa were behind them in the pecking order.
And there was little doubt about it: those three were nothing more than backups.
Arnautovic, Taremi, and Correa combined for 2067 minutes in Serie A last campaign. That entails less than 700 minutes per player on average.

Arnautovic and Correa have already left Inter Milan. And by all accounts, the Nerazzurri are looking to find a new club for Taremi just a season after he arrived.
That looks like a clear admission that the strategy that led to last season’s attack failed.
Moreover, the Nerazzurri are sending a clear message with their squad-building for next season. And nowhere is that more clear than in attack.
Inter have reportedly sealed a deal to sign 21-year-old striker Ange-Yoan Bonny from Parma. That should become official next week.
Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri have reportedly made a huge decision about the future of Francesco Pio Esposito. They feel that he is ready for the senior squad.
Pio Esposito just turned twenty years of age yesterday.
The Gazzetta note that Inter don’t just want reliable backups to Martinez and Thuram. They are going all in on two players who they expect to be hungry to really push the first-choice starters.
Then, if things go according to plan, Bonny and Pio Esposito could grow into the starting roles themselves over the next couple of years.
