Yuri Alberto has gone seven matches without scoring for Corinthians, his longest barren spell since September.

He last found the net on nine April, scoring the second in the Libertadores win over Platense of Argentina, a match that marked Fernando Diniz’s debut. According to Globo.com, the forward has since been praised for his wider contribution.

Across the subsequent run he has produced strong displays and provided an assist for Jesse Lingard to seal victory over Peñarol of Uruguay last week.

After that game, Diniz highlighted Alberto’s impact beyond goals, saying the team have continued to win with him on the pitch and praising his work rate, selflessness and courage. He added that working with the 25-year-old is an honour and that he has never stopped believing in him.

The current run is his longest since last year, when a nine-match drought ended against Flamengo at Neo Química Arena in the Brasileirão.

Even so, he remains Corinthians’ leading scorer this season with five in 21 appearances. His next chance to end the sequence comes on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time away to Santa Fé in Bogotá in the fourth round of the Libertadores group stage.
