Since PSG knocked Liverpool out at Anfield on 11 March 2025, winning on penalties after a 1-0 first leg and a 0-1 return, the two clubs have diverged, Paris towards glory, Liverpool towards problems despite later becoming champions of England.
On that night Ousmane Dembélé struck in the 12th minute and PSG advanced 4-1 on spot-kicks. According to L'Équipe, the Anfield tie crystallised Gianluigi Donnarumma’s presence, Désiré Doué’s fearlessness and a sense of destiny after January’s 4-2 over Manchester City.
Five days later Liverpool lost the League Cup final to Newcastle 1-2, and though they took the title they faded badly. Since then they have lost 19 times across competitions, Arne Slot is under pressure, Mohamed Salah has struggled and cohesion has frayed.
Slot has repeatedly framed the tie as a roll of the dice and one of his team’s best displays since he arrived. He has also noted they were the only side to take PSG to extra time and penalties last season.
In May, Virgil van Dijk did not dismiss the idea that it was a turning point and said the 1-0 first leg at the Parc des Princes underlined PSG’s style, individual quality and work-rate.
The mood is harsher after a 0-4 Cup quarter-final defeat by Manchester City on Saturday and the growing risk of missing the Champions League, with Liverpool 5th by one point over Chelsea. Writer Dan Fieldsend sees Wednesday as a chance to relaunch the season, though he accepts hopes are slim.
