When FC Barcelona were first linked with a move for Croatian veteran Ivan Perisic this summer, one would have been forgiven for thinking they had time-travelled back to 2015. However, it does look like Hansi Flick is seriously considering the signing of the 36-year-old.

Perisic’s longevity continues to amaze, with the Croatian continually showing he has what it takes to keep competing at the highest level. One would have assumed his career was coming to a close when he moved to Hajduk Split, but the 36-year-old swiftly returned to PSV Eindhoven.

In 39 games across all competitions for the Dutch side this season, Perisic has finished with 16 goals and 11 assists. He has previously worked under Hansi Flick, during his season-long loan spell at Bayern Munich from Inter Milan.

Perisic’s contract with PSV comes to a close at the end of this month, and he has been pushing to agree a move to Barcelona. However, as per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have a deadline to decide whether or not they want to sign him.

PSV start their pre-season on June 30 and have tabled a two-year contract proposal to see the €1.5 million-rated Croatian continue. Perisic, on the other hand, wants to play at the highest level ahead of the World Cup and is waiting for a response from Barcelona.

However, since the Dutch club would like a response from the player before the start of pre-season, Barcelona will need to decide quickly on whether or not they are moving for Perisic. Despite his age, arriving on a free transfer and on low wages, this might not be a bad signing.

Perisic is versatile and can play anywhere across the front line and even at left-back. He would provide cover in multiple positions for Hansi Flick’s team, although he might not get to be the regular starter that he might want to be.

Ultimately, this is a signing that most Barcelona fans are on the fence about, at least at the moment. He would not be a bad addition to the squad, but it also won’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t arrive this summer. Let’s wait and see how it plays out.
