One of the more surprising stories to emerge yesterday was that Manchester City had contacted PSG about the possibility of signing goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Fabrizio Romano reported that City had contacted PSG over a potential move for the Italian international. Now, a new report indicates that City have agreed on personal terms with Donnarumma. It seems that Manchester City’s move for one of the premier goalkeepers in European football is gathering pace.
French publication L’Equipe has reported that Manchester City has agreed on personal terms with Gianluigi Donnarumma. Furthermore, the L’Equipe report indicates that Donnarumma has also spoken to Pep Guardiola about a potential move to the Etihad. L’Equipe further reports that City is now looking into the best way to approach PSG over signing the Italian international.
Gianluigi Donnarumma is one of the top goalkeepers in European football. His saves were crucial to PSG’s treble success last season. Donnarumma’s heroics throughout PSG’s successful Champions League campaign were pivotal to their success. If Manchester City were to sign him, they’d be adding an elite shot-stopper. However, it must be said that Donnarumma isn’t an elite keeper in possession. But his shot-stopping ability does offset that downside in his game.
What is clear is that City won’t move for Donnarumma if Ederson doesn’t leave the club. The fact that Manchester City have reportedly made their move for the Italian international suggests that Ederson may be on the verge of leaving the club. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Galatasaray are set to submit an offer to City for Ederson. What happens next will shape Manchester City’s move for Donnarumma.
If Manchester City did sign Donnarumma, it would set up a battle between him and James Trafford for the number-one goalkeeper position. Trafford has stated his intention to one day become Manchester City’s number-one keeper. To do that, as it stands currently, he’d have to take Ederson’s position. But if Ederson leaves and Donnarumma arrives Trafford will battle Donnarumma for that position. The equation in front of Trafford wouldn’t change just who he’d be battling with would.
Manchester City’s move for Gianluigi Donnarumma is gathering pace. It did appear to be a move that was a non-starter. As of right now, it would be a surprise if City didn’t sign the Italian international based on all of the available information.
