One player who almost seemed certain to join Manchester City this summer was Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. But after City signed Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders it seemed that City’s move for the England international had fallen by the wayside. As of right now, Manchester City do not seem to need to add another midfielder to Pep Guardiola’s squad.

But a new report indicates that City have now agreed personal terms with Morgan Gibbs-White. Perhaps City’s move for Gibbs-White is back on. But there is one major issue. That move doesn’t seem to make sense given how Manchester City’s squad is constructed.

Unless players leave City a move for Morgan Gibbs-White doesn’t make sense.

There isn’t any doubt about the quality of Morgan Gibbs-White. He showed throughout the 24/25 season just how good he is as he helped Nottingham Forest finish seventh in the Premier League. Gibbs-White was an important, if not the most important player for Forest last season. His creativity, technical ability and energy in midfield were key to Nottingham Forest’s rise up the Premier League table. But looking at the current Manchester City squad, it’s hard to see where he would fit into Pep Guardiola’s squad.

As of right now, Manchester City are stacked with midfielders. Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Nico all figure to have key roles to play for City next season. There just doesn’t appear to be room for Morgan Gibbs-White in Pep Guardiola’s squad. That could change if one or two midfielders left City. Of those players listed above, Ilkay Gundogan or Mateo Kovacic would be the favourites to leave. Although in the case of Kovacic, he is currently recovering from Achilles surgery, which would seemingly scupper any chance of him being sold. Perhaps Ilkay Gundogan could leave City and that would free up space for Morgan Gibbs-White to join Pep Guardiola’s squad. But that possibility doesn’t seem realistic at this time.

It will interesting to see if today’s news from Football Insider has any legs. Morgan Gibbs-White would add quality to the Manchester City squad but it’s hard to see where he’d fit into the City squad so a move from City for the England international just doesn’t make sense at this time.
