It has almost gone unnoticed that Phil Foden’s contract with Manchester City is set to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season. Foden, when at his best, is a vital player for Pep Guardiola’s side. Unfortunately for Foden, after he made a strong start to the 2025/26 season, his form has severely tapered off. Manchester City need Foden at his best, given how crucial he is to their play. Also, given his contract situation, they need to extend Phil Foden’s contract.
On the contract front, it has been reported that City and Foden’s camp have continued contract negotiations over the current international break. If City can tie Foden down a new deal the next step is getting Foden back into form so he can do what he does best for his team.
Graeme Bailey has provided an update on Manchester City’s bid to extend Phil Foden’s contract for TeamTalk. Bailey reports that Manchester City have stepped up their efforts to sign Foden to a long-term contract extension over the current international break. Furthermore, Bailey reports that there is growing confidence that Foden will sign a new deal at City before this season ends. It is also reported that Phil Foden wants assurances about his role in this Manchester City team. Also, Foden wants clarity about his long-term importance to Pep Guardiola’s side. Graeme Bailey also reports that City view Foden as an integral component of their team and future and want him to sign a long-term contract extension.
It would be a major surprise if Phil Foden didn’t sign a contract extension with Manchester City. It is also reported by Graeme Bailey that Bayern Munich are keeping eye on Foden in case contract negotiations with City stall. However, it does seem like it would take something drastic to occur for Foden to leave the club he grew up at.
In terms of Phil Foden returning to his best form, it would be great to see him let the game come to him. Foden is at his best when he plays on his natural instinct and allows his prodigious talent to come through. That has stood out when Foden is in full flight. Whether Phil Foden is turning opponents inside out on the turn, or blasting the ball into the top or bottom corner from outside the box, when he allows the game to come to him, he is at his best. The hope is that the natural flair in Foden’s game returns and his confidence comes back as a result of this.
Manchester City appears eager to sign Phil Foden to a long-term contract extension. That is a sound move by City. Foden remains a vital player for them. They also need the England international to rediscover his swagger, so perhaps Foden playing his natural game is the best way for him to return to top form.
