Academy Match Report: Manchester United U21s 3-2 Sunderland U21s

Manchester United Under-21s kicked off the Premier League 2 play-offs on Sunday afternoon, hosting Sunderland Under-21s.

After finishing in second place in the league phase, United faced 15th-placed Sunderland in the Round of 16.

It was a strong selection from head coach Adam Lawrence, including Shea Lacey, Tyler Fletcher, and Jim Thwaites, all of whom had recently appeared on the first team bench.

First half

The visitors were the first to threaten when Jenson Jones broke down the right wing and played the ball inside for Felix Scott to poke towards goal, but Sonny Aljofree was alert and cleared off the line.

Two minutes later, another clearance from Aljofree saw the United captain take a heavy challenge, but fortunately the centre-back was able to continue for United.

Sunderland were the team on top in the opening stages, but United opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a lightning-quick counter-attack.

Jack Moorhouse latched onto a poor touch in midfield to steal the ball and rush forward before slipping through Chido Obi, who finished the move off clinically.

Shea Lacey thought he had doubled United’s lead with his right-footed curler heading for the top left corner, only for the shot to be saved by Isaac Allan —the first of many on the day.

United did get their second in the 26th minute. Another counter-attack launched by Moorhouse saw Lacey initially denied by the keeper before Moorhouse’s follow-up attempt was cleared off the line, but it was third time lucky for United as Jack Fletcher slid the ball into the goal.

The young Red Devils’ quality began to shine through, but a mistake at the back allowed Sunderland to stay in the contest, as they headed into the break at 2-1.

Second half

Another interception in midfield created United’s third goal just before the hour mark, when Tyler Fletcher stepped up to steal and feed Lacey, who cut inside and shot low into the right corner.

Lacey came close again moments later with another curling effort that was tipped away by Allan.

It was a day of mistakes; an unlucky slip by Tyler Fletcher at the edge of the United area saw Jack Whittaker take full advantage as Sunderland pulled another back to make it 3-2.

Sunderland’s Jenson Jones went on a marvellous run past two United players late on, but a scrambling Aljofree made sure to make the block and keep United’s lead intact at the full-time whistle.

United now advance to the quarter-finals, where they will meet the winners of the match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace.
