Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson is widely believed to be Manchester United’s dream midfield target.
United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Anderson ticks many boxes to strengthen the side’s midfield and should be their priority target. However, Manchester City are also in the race to sign the Englishman.
Recently, Fabrizio Romano claimed that City are stepping up their efforts to secure Anderson’s services ahead of United. Meanwhile, a report suggests the Red Devils’ hunt for a midfielder has taken a sharp twist.
According to SportsBoom, Manchester United have “made their minds up” and Adam Wharton is the name “lighting up Old Trafford’s summer plans”.
It is believed the club’s hierarchy have identified Wharton as their number one target. Furthermore, they are “ready to launch a £50-60million swoop to land one of England’s brightest young stars.”
The 22-year-old, who moved to South London from Blackburn Rovers, is tied to Selhurst Park until 2029. However, he is expected to leave the Eagles during the upcoming transfer window.
Much has been made about Casemiro‘s form under Michael Carrick, with many fans demanding United extend his stay.
However, it is underlined that the Brazilian is heading for the exit as United are refusing to backtrack.
The Premier League giants want “youth, energy and tactical intelligence, and Wharton ticks every box.”
The Crystal Palace gem has drawn comparisons to Carrick, owing to his composure with the ball at his feet and exceptional passing range.
The 6ft-tall midfielder appears to lack athleticism, but he possesses defensive awareness and the ability to dictate the tempo of the game.
The report adds United have also tracked Sandro Tonali, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carlos Baleba, but Wharton remains the standout option, as there is a belief he could be the cornerstone of their new era at the Theatre of Dreams.
