CD Castellón’s transfer landscape has been transformed in the past two summers, and Álex Calatrava now tops the list. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he has joined Espanyol for five million euros, plus interest on instalments, a 15% sell-on and a right of first refusal on one or more players.

The fee is the biggest sale in the club’s history and crowns the rise of a playmaker who arrived on a free in summer 2024 from Atlético Madrid B. Since Bob Voulgaris joined the club, records have tumbled.

Last summer, Castellón sold Daijiro Chirino to UD Almería for two million euros, equalling the previous high. Soon after, Raúl Sánchez departed for Necaxa for more than one million euros.

This summer, Castellón will also receive around one million euros for Jozhua Vertrouwd under an agreement reached last year with Rayo Vallecano.

Before this surge, the record belonged to Álvaro Fidalgo, who left mid-2020/21 for Club América. The option was later exercised for two million euros, but Castellón collected only half because Real Madrid retained 50% of his economic rights.

In 2010, Leo Ulloa moved to Almería for one point eight million euros. Half went to agent José Manuel García Osuna, who held that share of rights and was also a club representative, and the remaining 900,000 euros was split into two notes of 450,000, which the Castellnou case later examined.

Other notable sums include Manuel Arana to Racing Santander in 2009 and Natalio Lorenzo to Almería in 2007, each around 500,000 euros. Earlier, Pedro Alcañiz to Valencia in 1986 and goalkeeper Emilio Isierte to Sporting Gijón in 1991 were roughly 480,000 euros, while Pepe Mora to Recreativo in 2009 and Rubén Díez to Tenerife in 2021 were about 200,000. Below that sit Gaizka Mendieta to Valencia in 1992 near 180,000 and Luis Mario Cabrera to Atlético de Madrid in 1980 at about 140,000.
