This follows the sacking of Jon Dahl Tomasson by Sweden.

Graham Potter becoming Sweden’s new head coach on a short-term deal, with his contract covering the World Cup qualifies against Switzerland and Slovenia in November, as well as a potential play-off in March, and will be automatically extended through next summer’s World Cup finals if Sweden qualify.

Interesting to see whether Graham Potter continues with Tomasson’s decision to give the captaincy to somebody with the character of Alexander Isak.

Newcastle United pair Anthony Elanga and Emil Krafth will be both hoping for better times with Graham Potter in charge of Sweden.

Graham Potter will be the new national team captain for the men’s national team. The goal is to create optimal conditions to reach the World Cup in the summer of 2026. – Together with the players, I want to realize the fans’ dream of a championship summer, says Graham Potter.

After only one point after the first four matches in the World Cup qualifiers this fall, the Swedish Football Association’s board chose to terminate the appointment of national captain Jon Dahl Tomasson last Tuesday.

The men’s national team will be led by Graham Potter from Monday, October 20. The agreement extends over the ongoing qualifying period with matches against Switzerland and Slovenia in November and a potential playoff in March, and will be automatically extended through the World Cup playoffs next summer if Sweden qualifies there.

– I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world’s best leagues during the weeks. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team deliver at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer, says Graham Potter.

Graham Potter, 50 years old from England, has a solid experience of British football and a good knowledge of Swedish football after seven successful years (2011-2018) at Östersunds FK. After his Swedish stay, during which Graham Potter led Östersund FK to European Cup matches, he has had several coaching assignments in England at clubs such as Swansea City (Championship), Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and West Ham in the Premier League.

The chairman of the Swedish Football Association, Simon Åström, is satisfied with the quick handling of finding a good solution for the men’s national team.

– It is still our goal to get to the World Cup next summer. Our hope is to play the playoffs in March and all the decisions we have made now have been made based on optimizing the conditions to be able to reach our goal. We have worked structured and focused on this process during the past week and with Graham Potter we get a strong and experienced leadership that has been tested at the absolute highest level, he says.

Kim Källström, Football Director at SvFF:

– It feels very good that Graham is coming in as the national team captain for the men’s national team. We are all aware of the situation we are in, and believe that with his leadership skills he will bring the team together in a good way. He is tactically skilled at creating conditions to win matches and has an ability to identify players’ strengths and how they interact in the best way.
