Two-time Ballon d’Or Féminin winner, Alexia Putellas, has claimed to not be bothered by the prospect of individual awards with her full focus on success with Spain at Euro 2025.

There is no doubt that Alexia Putellas is once again one of the best in the world and although individual history could await the midfielder this year, Spain remains her top priority.

After suffering ligament damage in her knee during preparation for Euro 2022, there was fears that Putellas would never return to the high levels that she was achieving before the injury.

However after a year away from football, the 31-year-old finally made her return for Barcelona and Spain. Following her comeback, the quality of Putellas’ game has miraculously been just as high as it was when she won the Ballon d’Or Féminin in back to back seasons between 2021 and 2022.

“Without a doubt I’m a better Alexia,” Putellas said on her injury. “I know myself a lot better, I know my qualities, I know what I have been working on. In the end, all the suffering makes you evolve as a person and as an athlete. I’ve learned to manage the bad moments a lot better, as well as the good moments.”

Alexia Putellas chasing history

Despite her impressive return to the pitch, Putellas has made it clear that her desire for a first European Championship with Spain takes priority over what would be a historic third Ballon d’Or.

“The individual award is not something too important for me. But it would show that you’ve done something good and, from where I’m coming from – from the lowest of the lowest after the injury – it would give some value to the effort that was put into the recovery. We’ll see, but the most important thing is to win the Euro.”

In Putellas’ absence Spain still dominated the individual awards and even without the superstar midfielder playing, it was international and club teammate Aitana Bonmati who claimed back to back Ballon d’Or awards.

After winning the Nations League and Liga F this year, both Putellas and Bonmati are in prime positions to become the first player to win the Ballon d’Or three times with the pair leading the odds.

A first European Championship success in Switzerland this summer for Spain would cement Putellas and Bonmati as Ballon d’Or favourites and with the top ranked nation just 2/1 to win the tournament according to the best UK football betting sites, success for the Barcelona duo seems likely.
