Former Real Madrid star Marcelo revealed why he calls Cristiano Ronaldo an “alien” after their successful years together in Madrid.
Former Real Madrid defender Marcelo shared new details about his close partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo explaining why he often describes the Portuguese legend as “alien”.
Speaking to FourFourTwo, Marcelo said playing with Ronaldo during their years together in Madrid was a huge honor. The two player shared the pitch for nearly a decade between 2009 and 2018 winning several major titles including two La Liga trophies and four Champions League titles.
Marcelo described Ronaldo as a unique player and leader stressing that his qualities go far beyond the physical power that many fans focus on.
According to Marcelo, one key reason for their strong understanding on the field was their shared background in street football. Both players grew up playing informally before entering professional academies.
The Brazilian said those early experiences helped them read each other’s movements during matches. Often they did not need to speak or plan their actions in advance because they understood each other with just a look.
Marcelo also revealed that Ronaldo sometimes offered advice during games helping teammates deal with difficult moments and tactical challenges.
Marcelo & Ronaldo formed one of the most dangerous attacking partnerships on the left side of Real Madrid’s lineup. Their combination played a major role in one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.
During that time, the duo appeared together in more than 300 match helping the Spanish giants dominate European football and collect several major trophies.
Marcelo also spoke about the intense rivalry with Lionel Messi who starred for Barcelona during the same period.
He admitted that facing Messi was extremely difficult saying that playing against the Argentine sometimes felt like a “nightmare”.
Marcelo added that former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho played a key role in helping the team compete with Barcelona during the era dominated by Pep Guardiola.
Mourinho pushed the team to improve and helped Real Madrid end Barcelona’s domestic dominance by winning La Liga in 2012.
The partnership between Marcelo & Ronaldo remains one of the most memorable combinations in modern football. Their understanding on the left wing helped Real Madrid create many decisive moments in big matches.
