Former Manchester United star Alvaro Carreras has had a promising start to life at Real Madrid.

The Spaniard was one of Real’s most expensive signings of the summer, joining Los Blancos from Benfica in a deal worth around €50 million.

Carreras, who was part of the Spanish outfit’s youth setup before moving to Manchester, has taken little time to earn plaudits for his performances under Xabi Alonso.

Los Blancos have won all of their opening three games in La Liga, taking an early lead over Barcelona in the title race ahead of the international break. The 22-year-old started in all three games, impressing on both ends of the field as a left-back.

Manchester United regret not retaining Alvaro Carreras’ services

According to Defensa Central, figures in Manchester “can’t believe” how good Carreras has been in the Spanish capital.

It is claimed that his display under Alonso has “generated great anger” at Old Trafford.

United reportedly can’t understand why they didn’t do more to keep hold of their academy product, who left the club without making a single senior appearance during his four-year long stint.

Former United manager Erik ten Hag decided to loan him out to Benfica, who signed him on a permanent transfer in the summer of 2024.

Now, the Red Devils allegedly believe they have “lost a great player.”

Amorim preferred Dorgu over Carreras

Carreras was strongly linked with a return to United early this year, as Ruben Amorim searched for a new wing-back for his 3-4-3 formation.

As per multiple reports, United had a buy-back option in the region of £20m for their former talent.

However, the United head coach eventually decided to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce to strengthen his left flank.
