Former Leeds United favourite Andrew Hughes has been appointed set-piece coach at Athletic Club.

Earlier this month Athletic Club appointed Edin Terzic as head coach. In a club statement, Hughes was named set-piece specialist, due to join next Monday after performing the same role with Scotland at the World Cup, with previous posts at Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.

Hughes was a popular figure at Elland Road between 2007 and 2010, making 139 appearances in all competitions. He helped Simon Grayson’s side win promotion from League One in 2009/10.

After retiring in 2015, he moved into coaching across the EFL and was most recently at Leicester City. He left the Foxes to take a short-term role on Steve Clarke’s Scotland staff for the World Cup.

Marcelo Bielsa also worked at Athletic Club, enhancing his European reputation during two seasons there. His side beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford in a Europa League last-32 first leg, then won 2-1 in Bilbao to progress.

Athletic finished 12th in La Liga last season. The table was tight, they were six places above relegated Mallorca yet only three points separated the teams.
