Manchester United have reached an agreement for their second midfield signing of the summer.
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, spent over a month trying to convince West Ham United to lower their demands for Mateus Fernandes, but ultimately the Hammers refused to budge on their valuation and sold the Portuguese midfielder to Tottenham Hotspur.
After missing out on Fernandes, United approached Chelsea for their talented midfielder and, unlike during their pursuit of the West Ham man, they have swiftly wrapped up a big-money deal.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Andrey Santos.
United will pay a fee worth £48 million plus £2m in easily achievable bonuses for the services of Santos.
Furthermore, Chelsea are set to retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause for the dynamic midfielder.
The 22-year-old Brazilian has also agreed personal terms with United and has been given permission by Chelsea to travel and complete the transfer.
Santos is expected to follow his fellow countryman, Ederson, to Old Trafford, as INEOS have also found a total agreement with Atalanta.
Chelsea signed Santos, who is viewed as a strong box-to-box midfielder, from Vasco da Gama for a fee is in the region of £18m in 2023. He enjoyed a prolific loan stint at French outfit RC Strasbourg during the 2024-25 campaign.
The Blues value Santos highly, but the youngster wants to establish a regular starting spot, which is unlikely to happen in London after Moises Caicedo committed to a new long-term contract.
Last season, he made 43 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions, registering three goals and four assists.
United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is well aware of Santos’ potential, as the Samba sensation was one of the first signings Chelsea made under the German’s watch during his stint at Stamford Bridge.
