Former Manchester United winger Antony (25) has criticised the treatment he received at Old Trafford before sealing a permanent move to Real Betis, claiming he was shown “a lack of respect” during his final months at the club.
The 25-year-old Brazilian, who was signed from Ajax for £85m in 2022, found himself frozen out under manager Ruben Amorim and placed in United’s so-called “bomb squad,” a group of players deemed surplus to requirements and put up for sale in the summer. Having impressed on loan at Betis last season, he returned to the Spanish club in a permanent deal.
Speaking to ESPN Brasil and reported by Sky Sports, Antony admitted he takes responsibility for his United struggles but expressed disappointment at how he was treated behind the scenes. “I think there was a bit of a lack of respect, even a bit of rudeness too, with no one giving you a ‘good morning’, a ‘good afternoon’… not even that,” he said.
The forward, who managed 11 goals in 82 appearances for United, stressed he has now drawn a line under the episode. “That’s in the past. Now I’m here at Betis, I’m living here, and that’s the most important thing for me.”
