Liverpool have made a massive approach and it appears Arne Slot's reign is coming to an end.

Arne Slot may not have too many matches left in charge of Liverpool. Well, two if we’re being precise.

The Dutchman is under immense pressure in charge of the Reds, having been directly booed at Anfield with the 1-1 draw against Chelsea. It was a shocking result, especially as Chelsea went into it having lost six on the bounce.

But Liverpool were just outperformed. Chelsea outran them at Anfield - literally the first time they’ve outrun a Premier League side this season.

They won twice as many tackles, had more possession, a better xG...

And so is time up for Slot? It certainly feels that way right now as things have just declined dramatically this season and not improved. The football right now is not any better than it was at the back end of 2025 - a period when Liverpool suffered their worst run of defeats since the 1950s.

It seems that Liverpool view things that way, too. AS reports that they’ve approached Real Madrid for information on Xabi Alonso ahead of potentially moving for the Spaniard.

It’s an approach that suggests the faith in Slot has gone, in all honesty. Even if he does hang on through the summer, it feels as though it’s only a matter of time before he’s gone.

Arne Slot: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 10 May 2026, Arne Slot is facing significant pressure despite leading Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut season. The 2025/26 campaign has proven more difficult; the Reds currently sit fourth, having lost 11 league matches and recently exiting the Champions League to PSG. Most recently, Slot was booed by the Anfield crowd following a –1 draw with Chelsea on 9 May, a reaction sparked by his tactical withdrawal of teenager Rio Ngumoha. Overall, his side has conceded 47 league goals and recorded 18 defeats across all competitions this term.

Future and Speculation

While Slot has publicly stated he is "100% convinced" he can turn things around and reportedly rejected an approach from Ajax, his future remains uncertain. Liverpool executives have allegedly made enquiries regarding Xabi Alonso’s availability. However, recent reports suggest the club's hierarchy currently intends to retain Slot for the 2026/27 season, backed by a planned summer squad overhaul.
