The Ballon d'Or award night was a night very much owned by PSG and Barcelona, with both clubs’ individual stars taking centre stage.
Collectively, though, it was the reigning European champions who walked away with the prize for best team of the season.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph, coupled with their continued stranglehold on French football, earned them the night’s top collective honour. They pipped Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona and Botafogo to the award.
On the women’s side, it was another Champions League winner who came out on top. Arsenal, despite stumbling in domestic competitions, edged out Chelsea, Lyon, Orlando Pride and Barcelona to be named best women’s club.
The evening also tipped its hat to the season’s most prolific scorers. Viktor Gyökeres, who lit up Sporting Lisbon before sealing a move to Arsenal, collected the Gerd Müller Award after an extraordinary campaign in which he notched 63 goals in 58 matches for club and country.
In women’s football, Barcelona’s Polish forward Ewa Pajor took the honours. She found the net 51 times in 61 games across all competitions for the blaugrana and her national team.
The Sócrates Award, meanwhile, went to the Xana Foundation, run by the family of Luis Enrique in memory of his daughter, who tragically passed away at the age of nine from cancer.
