Gunners survive a late scare to remain on track for the Premier League title

Arsenal took a big step towards claiming the Premier League title after Leandro Trossard’s late strike earned a 1-0 win over West Ham.

It was far from comfortable for the Gunners, who started well but then found themselves in an arm-wrestle with a side fighting for their Premier League survival.

That match remained goalless until seven minutes from time, when Martin Odegaard played the ball back and Trossard found the bottom corner.

Callum Wilson appeared to have snatched an equaliser deep into stoppage-time but that was overturned after a VAR review for a foul from Pablo on David Raya.

Matt Verri was at the London Stadium to rate the Arsenal players...

David Raya 8

To the rescue. Again. Kept out Castellanos’ powerful header as West Ham pushed before half-time and then a massive save late on when Fernandes was clean through. Just about saved by VAR review for disallowed equaliser.

Ben White 5

Had started decently and more promising signs combining with Saka, but forced off early with a knee injury. Major blow for Arsenal with Timber out and White hitting form.

William Saliba 7

Maybe too hesitant when the ball broke free in the six-yard box from a Calafiori header. But right at it in defence - nobody made more tackles for Arsenal.

Gabriel 8

Another rock-solid display. Four headed clearances and marshalled the defence as ever. Could have done better at the end when nodding over from a corner.

Riccardo Calafiori 7

Rampant early on. Went close three times, including a flicked header and one brilliant long-range effort after combining with Gyokeres. Less convincing defensively and sacrificed for Arteta’s half-time reshuffle.

Declan Rice 7

Switch to right-back changed the game. He looked uncomfortable against Diouf’s pace and control in midfield was missed. Set-piece delivery was great and so was was the pass through to Odegaard leading the goal.

Myles Lewis-Skelly 6

Strange match. Some lovely turns under pressure but then struggled when West Ham stepped it up in midfield. Shifted to left-back in the second-half and hardly involved.

Bukayo Saka 4

Massive drop-off - none of his recent sharpness. Decision-making and execution was poor when shooting from range. Could not get in the game and booked for frustrated kick-out.

Eberechi Eze 6

Faded in and out of the match. Involved in Arsenal’s strong start and then grew into it again after half-time, playing passes through the lines. End product was lacking.

Leandro Trossard 9

Arsenal’s hero with a potentially title-winning moment. Kept his cool with composed finish. Played like a man possessed, having gone close with two early headers and played Calafiori in behind. Ran himself ragged.

Viktor Gyokeres 6

Worked tirelessly as ever and got himself into a few confrontations with the West Ham defenders. Cut a frustrated figure at times and no sniff of goal but did a job up top.

Substitutes:

Martin Zubimendi (White 28’) 2

Brutal. Overpowered in midfield and offered no control in possession. Mistake to bring him on and Arteta then ruthlessly took him off midway through the second half.

Cristhian Mosquera (Calafiori 46’) 4

Brought on to fix the problems at right-back but did not look comfortable. Hesitant in attack and then booked for hauling down Summerville.

Martin Odegaard (Eze 67’) 8

Arsenal’s captain dragged them to victory. Grabbed control of the match just before the goal and then created that when weaving into the box. Huge contribution.

Kai Havertz (Zubimendi 67’) 7

Technical quality in the final third went up when he brought some composure.

Noni Madueke (Saka 80’) N/A
