Arsenal travel to St James’ Park with their captain Martin Odegaard in line for a long-awaited return. The Norwegian has been absent for three matches due to a shoulder problem, but Mikel Arteta is hopeful of having his influential midfielder back. “Martin will be training with us the next two days, so hopefully he will be available for the game,” said Arteta.
Arteta rotated heavily in the midweek Carabao Cup win over Port Vale, making nine changes, and another reshuffle is expected for the clash with Newcastle. David Raya will take his place in goal, supported by a back line of Gabriel, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori. Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice are fresh for midfield duty after limited minutes in midweek, while Odegaard is pushing to start. Should he not be fully ready, Mikel Merino is on standby.

Bukayo Saka looks set to start his first Premier League fixture in a month following a hamstring setback. The winger was eased back against Manchester City last weekend before completing an hour at Port Vale. “I think he played the games we anticipated,” said Arteta. “He feels good. He will be training the next two days.” His presence gives Arsenal added firepower for what is always a fiercely contested fixture with Newcastle.
Viktor Gyokeres is expected to lead the line after being rested in midweek, although Arteta has decisions to make out wide. Eberechi Eze, who netted his first Arsenal goal on Wednesday, is pushing for a start, but Gabriel Martinelli’s pace remains an attractive option against Newcastle’s full-backs.
