Arsenal have taken up the lead in the race to land Chelsea target and Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens in the rapidly approaching summer transfer window and are a ‘step ahead’.
The 20-year-old left winger joined Dortmund from Manchester City in 2020 and he has already made 104 appearances for the German giants.
Dortmund are struggling in the Bundesliga this season, but Gittens has managed to find the back of the net 12 times, laying on five assists in all competitions.
The England Under-21 international is now gathering interest from the Premier League, with Chelsea and Arsenal both widely credited with being keen on securing him.
Chelsea are keen on signing young talented players and left winger Gittens is high on the list of candidates they are looking to strengthen their left side.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are also gearing up for a busy summer transfer window with their key focus on their forward department as they bid to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Securing a deal for a centre forward is Arsenal’s priority, but they are also keen on beefing up their left wing position by adding Gittens.
It had been suggested that Enzo Maresca’s side were leading the race to land the former Manchester City winger.
However, according to German daily the Ruhr Nachrichten (via Fussball Transfers), Arsenal are a ‘step ahead’ of Chelsea in the race to add Gittens.
Gittens has a contract with Dortmund until the end of 2028 and the youngster is ready to part ways with the club.
The England Under-21 international has spent time in the Chelsea academy system during the early days of his football career before joining Reading in 2012.
Despite spending the majority of his youth career in English football the 20-year-old did not make a senior appearance until he joined the German giants.
Gittens has admirers in the Bundesliga as well and it remains to be seen where Gittens will end up in the summer.
