Mikel Arteta has said it is ‘too easy’ to question Arsenal’s mentality after the club’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

Arsenal missed the chance to end a six-year wait for a major trophy after losing 2-0 to the Citizens at Wembley. Nico O’Reilly scored both goals for Pep Guardiola’s side, who claimed a ninth League Cup title, and sixth since 2016.

Arsenal produced a flat performance in the final and have been criticised for failing to rise to the occasion.

After three consecutive seasons as Premier League runners-up and a semi-final exit in the Champions League last season, questions have been asked about Arsenal’s ability to get over the line and win big trophies.

Arteta, however, has refuted that stance and is confident his team, who lead the Premier League and are into the last eight of the FA Cup and Champions League, can secure silverware across the run-in.

“I wouldn’t make it to the mentality part of that, especially when you lose or draw again to go through that. I think it’s too easy, that’s my opinion,” Arteta said in his post-match press conference.

“As I said before in the first half, there were some very, very good moments and we didn’t capitalise on them in the second half.

“There were some moments that they had and we had as well because we hit the post, we had a big chance as well with Gabi, another big chance through Viktor and we didn’t.

“You have to be credit to the opposition because they played as well and it’s not a coincidence what they’ve done in that period.”
