Aston Villa are seriously considering a move to bring Douglas Luiz back to the club. No formal talks between clubs have taken place, but Villa are exploring a potential deal for the Brazil international.
The Athletic reported last week that Chelsea were weighing up a loan for the rest of the season, viewing Luiz as a good fit for Liam Rosenior’s side as they compete in the league, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
Villa face a midfield shortage, with Boubacar Kamara out for the season with a knee injury and John McGinn expected to miss six weeks. Youri Tielemans appeared to suffer an ankle problem in the two-goal win at Newcastle United on Sunday.
Reinforcements had been under consideration even before Tielemans’ setback, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek among the options. Luiz was discussed among representatives, and only in recent days have Villa begun to explore the move in earnest.
Luiz, 27, is on loan at Nottingham Forest from Serie A side Juventus, and has made only eight league appearances this term after a hamstring injury earlier in the season. He left Villa for Juventus in summer 2024 for €50 million plus €1.5 million in add-ons, and in his first season in Italy he completed 90 minutes only twice.
Forest’s loan includes an obligation to buy that depends on appearances, with a €30 million option to buy if that threshold is not met.
